GENERAL
NAME: Amanda Faye Turner
NICKNAMES: Faye, exclusively. She made the switch in grade school, so former Port Prep students are probably the only people who know her first name at all.
AGE/DOB: 18 / January 29 1996.
BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood.
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female, she/her
SEXUALITY: Lesbian.
HOMETOWN: Los Angeles, CA with family homes in Calabasas and Elysian Fields. She attended Port Prep K-8.
CONCEPT: Aspiring gossip blogger goes where the wind takes her.
PHYSICAL
APPEARANCE: She wears a lot of dayglo colors and 80's/90's reminiscent fashions. Her hair changes color almost daily, but is pink or blonde most often. She does not appear to own a backpack, bookbag, or any kind of purse, but she does have a Lisa Frank trapper keeper and a pencil in her pocket a solid 75% of the time. If we're doing yearbook superlatives, she'd win "most likely to nap anywhere", and you can often see her catnapping in uncomfortable positions around campus, using aforementioned trapper keeper as a pillow.
Wardrobe, non-exhaustive.
HEIGHT: 5'6"
PB: Asami Zdrenka
PERSONALITY
LIKES: dogs, a good story told well, name-dropping, being the center of attention, bright colors, classic literature, dramatic irony, John Hughes movies, sleeping in late, girls (in a "fiercely defensive of" way, not a "I want to kiss them" way, although that too), hot dating gossip.
DISLIKES: being told "no", people who talk over other people, doing chores, being asked what she wants to do for a living, puzzles or riddles of any kind, cheap or greasy or otherwise questionable food.
PERSONALITY:
Faye is the proverbial millennial whose participation trophies went to her head. She thinks she's good at everything because she grew up being wildly validated by her hoverparents. And she firmly believes she deserves praise for competently executing even the most basic of tasks. If she doesn't receive this level of praise she has a tendency to become disinterested in whatever she was doing, or discredit whoever's opinion she doesn't agree with. She has the immediate physical presence of someone with a badly inflated ego; she loves being the center of attention and will always speak her mind, even if her opinions are controversial.
She's kind of judgmental because she thinks she's such hot shit, and has a bad habit of talking about people behind their backs. She's not downright mean so much as she is gossipy; she has an opinion on everybody she meets, and she's desperate to know other people's opinions on everyone else, too. This can sometimes make her come off as two-faced, since she'll just as happily talk shit about you as she'll talk shit with you. But she assumes everyone's this way, so she doesn't take it personally and doesn't think anyone else should either.
Also on the gossipy front: she sticks her nose where it absolutely doesn't belong, and will never learn her lesson about why she shouldn't do this. She wouldn't know a bad idea if it bit her on the nose. She has almost no sense of personal danger, especially if she's pursuing what she thinks is an interesting story. She's a leap-first-look-later type.
She's a bit of a motormouth, but luckily for her she's also pretty sharp and very good at relating anecdotes and spinning stories. Her parents and their friends are all artists, and Faye grew up with a strong bias towards creative learning. She has a very discerning eye for art and literature, and even if she can't do it herself, she knows good art when she sees it. She's always happy to offer constructive criticism on her classmates' work, although she lets her personal tastes get in the way of giving good advice sometimes.
Faye has a fixation with morals and ethics; she's got a very logical approach to it all and thinks of her moral compass as pointing due north. She's extremely political for somebody her age, and has an opinion to offer about just about anything. She's got a combative streak, and loves to debate issues, but has absolutely no tolerance for ignorance. She doesn't just decide other people are wrong and leave it at that; she wants to know exactly why they're wrong so she can tell them to their faces without fear of repercussion. She's extremely informed, and if she were a little more dedicated, she might be a good fit for politics.
That being said, she's by no means orthodox. She's always looking for better ways to do something; tradition and complacency have no place in her perfect world. She's a big believer in social equity, although her attempts to express this are sometimes misguided. Despite being mixed race and gay herself, her extremely wealthy family ensure that her upbringing was very privileged. She's a little more oblivious about the real ways of the world than she thinks she is. She's also more prone to philosophizing than offering practical solutions. In her mind, she's figured out everything that's wrong with society, but in reality, she's definitely not going to be the one to fix it.
HISTORY
FAMILY MEMBERS:
Basil Turner, father. An acclaimed director in the magical world. [Hogwarts Alumni/Ravenclaw]
Armand Alvarado, father. Her dad's second husband*, though they've been married since she was 2 so she doesn't particularly think of him as a stepfather. He's an actor. [Coyopamienzo Alumni/Peku]
Mr. Turner has had primary custody of Faye since he split up with her other dad; the Turners live in their Calabasas home. Basil is very well-known in the wizarding community and has a bit of a reputation for being a misanthrope; he prefers to stay home. He's not totally anti-social, though, and his husband frequently has guests over for dinner parties. Her bedroom is her favorite place in the world and overlooks the pool, a fact she'd use to her advantage during her dads' ritzy parties to spy on guests.
Basil has two dogs named Mulligan and Jamboree. Armand has a dog named Lucy.
Keith Knight, father. An antique jewelry dealer. [Hogwarts Alumni/Gryffindor]
Cary Logan, stepdad. Mr. Knight's latest arm candy. [Port Prep alumni, and at just shy of 8 years her senior, they did in fact overlap there. She's not super wild about it.]
The Knights live in their Elysian Fields home, and Faye spends about half her time there when she's home on break. Her bedroom there is a little less personalized than her Calabasas one.
Keith & Cary have a dog named Little Girl, who is a total princess. Faye has a teen puppy named Suzuki, who lives with the Knights when Faye's at school. She adopted her as a puppy at the end of last school year and has become very attached to her.
TL;DR too many dads. Her bio parents aren't in the picture; the adoption was private and closed, sorted out through the magical governments rather than the nomaj one. She knows that her birth parents are British half-bloods and alive and well in England. Now that she's 18 she's allowed to contact them without her dads' permission, but hasn't considered it seriously.
* Same-sex marriage wasn't legalized in California until 2008 and a gay couple probably wouldn't have been able to legally adopt a baby together in the 90's, but I'm just going to handwave that as MACUSA being more forward-thinking than the nomaj government or whatever.
HISTORY:
Though they grew up in the UK and attended Hogwarts, Basil and Keith had moved to Los Angeles long before Faye was ever born to pursue Basil's dream of being a film director. After struggling through their first ten years in the US, Basil finally hit it big with his first acclaimed film, and that's when his relationship started to sour. The pressure of being in the spotlight and living a newly lavish lifestyle caused tension between Basil and Keith, and their marriage was on the rocks when they decided to adopt.
Having a new baby, unsurprisingly, did very little to fix the underlying problems in their relationship, and they split up in 1997, sharing custody of their daughter. They were both doting parents, and when Basil remarried in 1998, his new husband was also a loving and supportive presence in her life. Keith's string of husbands and boyfriends were a less reliable influence, but many of them were wealthy or influential, and Faye is still friends with a few of her ex-stepsiblings. For the most part, though, she grew up as an only child and was extremely doted upon.
Having themselves had very strict upbringings and bad relationships with their parents, her dads were very encouraging of her and let her do... whatever the fuck she wanted, basically. They've shelled out a ton of money for lessons for hobbies that she abandoned after a year; she's tried learning to play many instruments, speak a handful of languages (some of the Spanish stuck), and played a variety of sports (she was really into horseback riding for awhile as a young teen). They're still very supportive of her aspirations, although she hasn't really settled on a future career yet.
The one thing that they were a little stringent about, strangely enough, was her sexuality. She thought of herself as being pansexual for a long time because her fathers encouraged her to be introspecting and insisted that she didn't have to be gay just because they were. Their intentions were good, but she spent most of her young adolescence feeling confused and not really having anyone to talk to about any of this.
She wanted to go to Gooseberry because some of her classmates at Port Prep had gone there and spoke highly of it; her grades were decent but not stellar, and she didn't have any particular talents to rest on, so her admission to the school was largely thanks to Basil and Keith pulling favors. She struggled academically there her first year; she was unused to not having her parents around to help her out with her schoolwork. But the sink-or-swim environment meant she eventually learned how to swim, and she's been doing passably well ever since then (being allowed to drop classes that don't interest her was a huge boon to her grades).
For her sophomore year, she applied to the Hogwarts exchange program, wanting to spend some time at her dads' school. She was accepted and sorted into Gryffindor there; it was while at this school that her interest in Quidditch was piqued. She'd been aware of it at Gooseberry, but two of her Gryffindor roommates were on the Quidditch team at Hogwarts and really got her into it. When she returned to Gooseberry her junior year, she tried out for the team and made reserve.
This year she was bumped up to first string chaser, and has been less dedicated to the sport than some of her more hardcore teammates are. This can sometimes be a point of contention with them, but she's a solid player and does well for the team. Her interest in the sport has been waning over the course of the year, though, and now she's thinking she might want to go into publishing after she graduates.
SCHOOL
YEAR: Senior (Grade 12)
HOUSE: Coppertale at Gooseberry, Gryffindor at Hogwarts
SORTING: Azurcrest's argument: with the best of the best for your friends, you'll fly higher than you ever could on your own. Ebonhide's argument: you have a brilliant mind, and you only need yourself and some introspection to grow. Ribbonfin's argument: compromise and level-headedness might not be your strong suits, but you know that focusing on your weaknesses is the best way to improve yourself. Coppertale's argument: you're already the best, and you know it. Why are you listening to those guys? (... yeah, why is she listening to those guys?)
WAND: Rosewood and ashwinder soot, eleven and three-quarters inches, exceptionally pliable.
FAMILIAR: Chavanne, a parrot who is capable of doing owl-like tasks, but thinks she's above doing them.
CLASSES: Charms, Herbology, Potions, Outdoor Education, Astronomy, Magical Rudiments, Wizard Lit.
SENIOR PROJECT: It's magic hair dye. A considerable amount of work went into this hair dye, mostly in the fields of potions and charms, but it is what it is. It changes colors on its own, shifting through 3 to 6 pre-chosen colors over the course of about a week. Her own hair currently goes blonde-pink-purple-blue.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: She's not a bad student, but she's no genius or super scholar either. With the proper encouragement and support, she can really flourish in a traditional classroom environment, but she's easily discouraged by failure, and has a bad tendency to just give up if she feels like things aren't going her way. Her favorite classes are magical rudiments and potions, and her least favorite classes are ones she's long since dropped - history of magic, hermeticism, transfiguration.
EXTRACURRICULARS: Quidditch (Chaser), Archery, Boating, Choir, Equestrian, Gardening, OE.
